The present work, "The Life of Bruno," is primarily based on the documents published by Berti, Dufour, and others, as well as the personal references in Bruno's own works. In the first part, I have attempted to shed light on Bruno's life in England, his relations with the French Ambassador, Mauvissière, and his involvement in some of the literary movements of the time. However, I have not been more successful than others in finding any documents that directly refer to Bruno's visit to England.
In the second part, "The Philosophy of Bruno," I have not aimed to provide a systematic outline of Bruno's philosophy as a whole under the various familiar headings, as that would be an almost impossible task. Instead, I have sought to offer a sketch, as closely as possible in Bruno's own words, of the problems that interested this mind of the sixteenth century and the solutions he proposed.
The first part of the work, "The Life of Bruno," is grounded in the published documents and Bruno's personal references in his own works. I have focused on illuminating certain aspects of his life, particularly his time in England, his interactions with the French Ambassador, Mauvissière, and his participation in the literary movements of the era. However, I have not been able to uncover any additional documents that directly address Bruno's visit to England, a task that has eluded others as well.
In the second part, "The Philosophy of Bruno," I have not attempted to provide a comprehensive and systematic outline of his philosophical system. Such an undertaking would be an almost insurmountable challenge. Instead, I have aimed to present a sketch, drawing as closely as possible on Bruno's own words, of the key problems that captivated his mind in the sixteenth century and the solutions he offered.
The present work is divided into two parts: "The Life of Bruno" and "The Philosophy of Bruno." The former is based on the published documents and Bruno's personal references in his own writings, with a focus on shedding light on his life in England, his interactions with the French Ambassador, Mauvissière, and his involvement in the literary movements of the time. However, I, like others before me, have not been successful in finding any documents that directly address Bruno's visit to England.
In the second part of the work, I have not sought to provide a comprehensive and systematic overview of Bruno's philosophical system under the various familiar headings. Such an undertaking would be an almost impossible task. Instead, I have aimed to offer a sketch, drawing as closely as possible on Bruno's own words, of the problems that captivated his mind in the sixteenth century and the solutions he proposed.
